In protest of the recent changes at LJ, a number of people have proposed the following:

For one day, make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.

SUP obviously does not realize that Basic users have given something of value to them, that it is content that drives the site.

So, for one 24-hour period, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT, let's see how many people we can get to pledge to contribute NO CONTENT.

This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase.

Who's with me, and what date shall it be?

Edited to add: Date is this Friday, March 21. Spread the word!

If anyone is interested in joining me this Friday, please leave a note here.

We need to clarify something...

Many people get confused about what "midnight" really is.

For the medical field, and the military, "midnight" is 0000-hours, or the tick-tock that begins Friday.

For many lay-people out there, "midnight" is the minute which comes after 2359 (11:59pm) on Friday. Which would be 24 hours later than the first circumstance I described. If this is to be truly synchronized, we need to clear this up. (Or, stop posting an hour earlier or later, so everyone is on the same page)

I'm just wanting everyone to be in-synch with this. I think it would produce a much stronger impact.

(Heh, I didn't even think about the earth's rotation as a factor!)

I'll pass the word.

And p.s. -- Sad to say, I wasn't even aware of SUP having acquired LJ from Six Apart until today. I suppose I was already frustrated with Six Apart's handling of matters... but now to be handed over to a Russian company, which may not value the original user-base of LiveJournal. Well, I'm exceptionally concerned.

Wait... what is going on with LJ?

Ever since Brad sold LJ, it's been slowly commercialized. First, there were ads and "sponsored content." Then they created the "plus" account level. Now they've removed the "basic" account level entirely -- if you sign up for a new account after 3/13, you can't use the basic account level anymore. It's either ads or pay. Lame.

SUP is a Russian company that took over the Russian-language segment of LJ. They've pretty extensively commercialized that subset. And now that they've purchased the rest of LJ, they're commercializing all of it. There have been complaints of spam and whathaveyou from SUP users. I suspect that this isn't too far off for the rest of us.

Yeah, I didn't know this. I'm not always that up-to-date on actual news. I'm IN!

Isn't this sort of following the same disastrous principle of "don't buy any gas" day?

No, because content is not something that's replaceable. If I don't record my thoughts for a day, it's not like I can record the same exact thoughts the next day.

I honestly don't think it is going to make a whole hell of a lot of difference. SA didn't care, SUP doesn't. It's not as if SUP has no idea how the user base is going to respond to changes. Free accounts, don't add to their $$$ and paid members who get pissed and leave take their $$ with them. However for every user who leaves, there will be another user to take their place, and for every user that leaves, that just reduced SUP operations overhead. Of course, if user action results in reduced profits to SUP, they'll just turn around and sell out to who knows just like SA did.

So what you're saying is that we're screwed no matter what?

Have you snagged yourself any radio slaves? If not, take a look at those Elinchroms. They're really nice.

I think so. We've been down this road with SA. SUP has had a year of controlling the RU version, and they clearly have spent time observing the SF based SA company. SUP is not blind to any of these reactions, they perfectly knew what user response was going to be.

In the end if our new Russian Overlords get sick of all the whining, they're going to do the exact same thing SA did, get tired of it, and sell us off. Personally, I think we dodged a bullet. I wonder what other options SA was considering aside from selling LJ to SUP.

SA could have easily merged us with VOX and go, oh now you need to comply with the VOX TOS, or SA could have just shut down LJ. "Sorry, but you're no longer economically viable for us, so we're just going to shut LJ down and divert resources toward more profitable venues.

Oh yeah. That's right. I'd forgotten that you snagged a pair of those. I love how small the Elinchroms are.

I like that it starts at GMT and not your local time. Maybe you should edit the post to include this image link;

Lets people find their zone and adjust accordingly.

I'm with you, btw.
